Book now for October Day of Dance and November Golden Flight!

Dreaming of slightly more predictable weather, and a chance to enjoy the longer daylight hours with friends? We have events coming up to make those dreams come true, specially tailored to your interests, and bookings are open now!

Interested in dance, music, or dressing up nicely? The October Day of Dance on Saturday 24th October is ideal for you. Interesting classes, delicious pot luck dinner (and lunch, if you’re clever and arrange to with friends to all bring something interesting, otherwise you’re right in town close to excellent cafes, and possibly a market, depending on covid level) and a Ball. Book online here and find more details here.

Interested in camping, combat, classes, craft, catered events, and cider? Golden Flight from 12 - 15 November is the one you're after. All those things and more, including a market, and with feasting, friendship and probably fire, if you include candles. At the remarkably rural Rimu Park, considering how close it is to town. Book online here and find more details here.

Southron Gaard

Welcome to the Barony of Southron Gaard, wherein you may step back in time to fight with chivalry, dance with grace, feast with gusto or pursue the diverse activities that enriched the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Southron Gaard is based in the South Island of New Zealand (principally in Christchurch, Dunedin and now in Timaru and Nelson) and is a branch of the international non-profit educational organisation, the Society for Creative Anachronism, New Zealand (SCANZ).

The SCA is dedicated to the research and recreation of pre-17th century European history, with a particular focus on its practical applications in arts and sciences, including costuming, cooking, martial arts, dance, calligraphy and illumination, metalwork, archery, music and much, much more.

See the box at right for to-the-minute information on current activities.

Fighter Auction Tournament

The Fighter Auction Tornament is held at Canterbury Faire. The first tournament was held in AS XLII. At the auction, people can bid for the fighters. If a fighter does well in the Tournament, their sponsor also prospers, having an opportunity to select a suitable prize from the items of largesse which are donated to the Fighter Tourney.

The proceeds from the auction are held in a fund by the Barony. People can apply to the Barony for money from this fund to support a project or activity. More details about the Fighter Auction Tourney and how to apply for funds is available here.

Event Sponsorship facilitation system

The Baron and Baroness will facilitate sponsorship of event fees, taking requests for and offers of sponsorship and then allowing sponsors to choose (if they wish) who they will sponsor. Full details are available here, and if you have any questions, please contact the Baron & Baroness.

Join the SCA!

Membership is NOT required to participate (although it is required to hold office), but it's pretty affordable and is vital to keep the organisation running. Non-members are charged a small additional fee to attend events (not meetings or practices).
