The Barony of Southron Gaard The Kingdom of Lochac

Naming Suggestions for Our Fair Lands

During the visit of King AEdward and Queen Yolande in AS38, it became apparent that the two main "national" parts of the recently-expanded Kingdom of Lochac needed agreed SCA names. A brainstorming session on the NZ-wide Althing email list led to the following unqualified list of names. Note: brainstorming depends on not knocking down oddball suggestions the minute they appear, because they'll often give rise to better suggestions. But it does mean that some of the names listed below are very unqualified. "Narnia", anyone?

The Kingdom Herald, Lord William de Castille, is continuing a process begun by his predecessor for determining an SCA name for New Zealand which is both acceptable to a large proportion of the local populace, and registerable with the College of Heralds. If any of the names below take your fancy, or give rise to a better idea, email your nomination(s) to Lord William before June 2 this year. He asks only that there be no joke names or time-wasting please, i.e. the names have to be historically plausible and capable of justification in the later proving and voting phases of the process.

A rough-as-guts "translation guide" has been added at the bottom to assist the decoding of some of the names.

AS 37-8 Discussion Excerpts

Lord Benedict of Askerigg collated some email discussions on the general subject during AS37 and AS38, and these are contained in this document, presented in reverse date order. In many cases, these discussions include names you'll see below, but sometimes with justification for why they seem good or bad. And there are a couple of posts on how to determine the appropriate feel or validity of a name.

Very Rough Translation Guide
