Below are events of interest to SCA
participants in Southron Gaard, regardless of whether or not they are
officially sponsored by the Barony. A number of activities are held
regularly, such as fighters' and archery practices, meetings for newcomers, the Singing group and the Seamsters.
If you are not yet involved with the SCA but would like to attend
any of the listed events, we'd be happy to see you. It may help to read
the notes for newcomers first. You may also choose to contact our Chatelaine for more information, or join the Southron Gaard Discussion list (SGDiscuss).

July Stuff night will be centred around the arcane art and science of Heraldry. Lady Veronica has kindly offered her knowledgeable assistance for this evening, which we will have more details for
closer to the time. Suffice to say come armed with your heraldry books and questions - there may even be a round of Heraldic Twister!

FIMBULWINTER
A winter camping event hosted by the College of St Kessog.
St Kessog's Fimbulwinter II
Three-day camping event at Berwick Lodge, south of Dunedin, run by the proto-College of St Kessog. Feasting, archery, dance, A&S, heavy and boffer fighting in a winter wilderness. Plenty of bunkrooms and warm halls await! Fee of $80 adult, $60 student, $40 child includes accommodation and pot-luck Friday dinner, all Saturday meals and breakfast and lunch Sunday.

Darton Anniversary – Thursday to Saturday, 11–13 September 2008
Darton (Wellington) Anniversary is a camping event to celebate the anniversary of the naming of the group.

Regular Activities
Throughout the year, a number of regular activities are held to help
foster arts and sciences, the fighting arts and keep the Barony running
smoothly.
Heavy Fighters' Practices
Fighters' practices are held once or twice a week and all are
welcome, whether to fight or to watch. Some gear is available for
beginners to try. Venues:
Sunday mornings, 10am: All year around, unofficial practices are
held at Richmond Village Green (Stanmore Road, opposite the New World
supermarket) on Sunday morning from 10am for approximately two hours.

Wednesday evenings, 6pm: During the summer months there are also
unofficial practices coordinated by Sir Tycho and held at Jasmine Place, Wigram (see calendar entries for details and map).
Shortly after the summer
daylight saving ends, the Wednesday practice is usually shifted to an
indoor location, or suspended until daylight saving resumes. See map here.

Rapier/Fencing Practices
Rapier (SCA fencing) practices are held twice a week and all are welcome,
whether to fight or to watch. Some gear is available for
beginners to try.
Sundays, noon: All year around, unofficial practices are
held behind the library at Barrington Park or at an address nearby (see the calendar) for approx. two hours from 10am Sunday morning. Not
on if wet.
Tuesday evenings, 7:30pm: Rain or shine, Tuesday rapier practice is
at the Clarence St Methodist Hall, cnr of Clarence and Nelson Streets,
Riccarton. See map here. Other Baronial events, such as Council or Medieval Stuff Nights
are often happening in parallel. A gold coin to help cover venue costs is sought on the first and fourth Tuesdays.

Archery
Archery (including occasional Mixed/Light combat archery) is on at
Kirkwood Intermediate, every Sunday at 2pm, wind and weather
permitting. Entrance is off Kirkwood Ave. or can drive in from
Riccarton Rd. Number 21, 23, 82, 83, 84 bus or Orbiter. If using 8 or
81, the school has an entrance on Riccarton Road. See map here.
Some gear is available for use by beginners, come and have a go!

Council Meetings
The Baronial Council Meetings are held at 7:30 pm, on the second
Tuesday of the month at Clarence St Methodist Church Hall, corner
Clarence and Nelson Sts, Riccarton. All welcome - you don't need to be
an Officer to attend or speak. See map here.

Seamsters
The Seamster's Group meets to discuss and work on sewing and
handcraft projects, usually with a different theme each month. The date
is usually the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, but the location
moves around as it is held at a member's house.

Barony Open Nights
Barony Open Nights are for both people who are intersted in what we do and for members of the Barony to come together to do many things including dance, rapier, sewing, crafts, leatherwork, embroidery, singing, and anything else they are interested in doing.
They are held every Tuesday from 7:30pm-9:30pm
Clarence St Methodist Hall
Corner Clarence and Nelson Sts, Riccarton
All are welcome to turn up at no charge and with no costumes required.

Arts and Sciences Meetings
Medieval Stuff Night: On the third Tuesday of every month,
Southron Gaard holds a get-together and A&S evening where all are
encouraged to bring projects, questions, newcomers, etc along to the
Clarence St Methodist Hall (map here.),
where people can participate in a range of activities. This could be
anything from simply chatting over a piece of embroidery, to practising
rapier, making a new sword, working on a banner design, selling off
odds and ends, learning a new dance, drumming, trying out some
calligraphy, checking out each others' books. Garb is not required and
newcomers are very welcome.

Southron Gaard Music Group/Dance Band at their regular monthly practice:

Southern Swans - the Southron Gaard and Ordo Cygni Singing Group
Do you like to sing? Do you have an interest in period music? If so,
please join the Southern Swans singing group. All levels of
experience are welcome. Our current song-list with a Noteworthy file for each can be found here.

Dance Classes
Southron Gaard holds dance classes conducted by Lady Nataliya the Kievan every Tuesday from 8:15pm at the same venue as Council meetings and Stuff Nights.
In addition, Southron Gaard folk are very welcome to attend weekly classes held during the university year by Ordo Cygni (see below), as follows:
WHAT: classes covering dances from England, France, Germany, and Italy - general/newcomer class from 7-8:30pm, middle-eastern drumming from 8:30pm
WHEN: March to mid-November, Monday evenings, from 7:00pm to approx. 9:30pm:

Ordo Cygni - University of Canterbury Medieval and Renaissance
Society
Ordo Cygni, an independent medieval recreation group based at the
University of Canterbury, runs steel-weapon practices, arts and
sciences classes, dance classes and occasional tournaments and feasts.
