Members of the SCA practice many arts, sciences, and past-times of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, both to broaden their knowledge, and to enhance the atmosphere at Society events. They do this through research, study and practice, and will often share their results with others via Collegia, symposiums, workshops, practices and infromal gatherings at any event. At any event, you can often often find people sewing, doing embroidery, making chain maille while sitting watching a tourney or waiting for court to begin.

Meetings, Guilds and Other Groups

Whether formal guilds or simply a get-together of friends, one of the best ways of learning about the various arts and sciences is by making contact with others practicising in your area of interest. Southron Gaard has a variety of groups, as well as people with a broad range of interests and skills.

Arts and Sciences Workshops are held in conjunction with "Doing Medieval Stuff" evenings on the third Tuesday of each month from 7:30 pm at Clarence St. Methodist Church Hall, corner Clarence and Nelson Sts, Riccarton. Gold coin donation. Please contact the Arts and Sciences Minister for information.

The Southern Swans Singing Group meets most Thursdays to learn and practise period songs (esp. rounds and part-songs) and the occasional filk, folk or traditional SCA song. Newcomers welcome -- see the calendar or contact the Swans for more information. Also see the current song list below.

The Southron Gaard Music Group/Dance Band meets on the first Tuesday of each month to learn and practise period instrumental music, especially but not only dance music. Newcomers of any experience are welcome -- see the calendar or contact Iulianna for more information.

The Seamsters' Guild is for those interested in sewing and textile arts, and holds monthly meetings open to anyone. Contact Lady Rose to find out the topic, confirmed date and location of the next meeting. Information on two current projects can be found here.

Southron Gaard Dance Practices are usually held after Council meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, and in conjunction with "Doing Medieval Stuff" nights on the third Tuesday of each month. During summer, they may also coincide with Wednesday night fighter's practice. See this link or contact Nataliya the Kievan for more information.

From February to mid-November, Ordo Cygni Dance Practices are held every Monday night. A full range of formal dances, country and others is covered. Contact Lady Emma for more information.

The Middle Eastern Guild is for people interested in the cultures, arts and sciences of Andalusia, North Africa (including the Maghreb), Turkey, the steppes of Central Asia, the realms of the Arabs, Persians, Afghans, mughals of India, mongol hordes and Emperors of Mainland China. Contact Isabel-Maria del Aguila for further information.

Check the Events Calendar for notices of workshops, meetings, symposia or other planned activities.

Library

The Southron Gaard Library is a significant collection of books, magazines, cassette and video tapes that cover a huge range of topics from dance, music, cooking, groups newsletters, architecture, heraldry, costume and more. Among other things, we have a large number of issues of the Compleat Anachronist, the SCA journal which provides in-depth research on specific topics.

The following collection lists are available online:

Not included in the above: a number of Tournaments Illustrated issues.

Access to the Baronial Library is primarily by appointment, although open days occur occasionally and relevant books are sometimes brought to themed events, such as Muster Days. The library is open to all SCA participants who register as a library user. Please see the Library Policy for more information, or contact the Arts and Sciences Officer.

Arts and Sciences Championship

The Barony sponsors an Arts and Sciences Championship, recognising excellence in the research and application of any of the many and varied arts and sciences.

Entries for the Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship are welcomed at any time, from anyone and on any subject. Contact the Arts and Science Officer to discuss your entry.

Your entry should be a completed project, rather than a work in progress, and may have been entered in Arts competitions/displays (e.g. event competitions, Laurel’s Prize Tourneys) before, but not previously as a Southron Gaard Baronial Championship entry.

Documentation is required. See the A&S Assistance box above for links to helpful papers on research and documentation within the SCA.

Entries will be examined by three judges, consisting of the A&S officer, a judge who will help judge all entries in that year, and an expert judge chosen by two ‘fulltime’ judges to help with that specific entry. Judging occurs in the month after the entry is submitted, and can be undertaken at an event or not, as appropriate.

Judges will mark the entries using the judging criteria. If an individual enters more than three items over the year only the best three scores will be counted towards the Championship total. Additional points will be awarded for any individual who teaches a class in Southron Gaard and publishes an A&S article.

If possible, all entries will be displayed at the first event to be held after they are submitted. Photographs will be taken of all entries (with the entrant's permission) and added to the Baronial photo album and, where appropriate, displayed on the Southron Gaard Website. All the years’ entries will also be displayed at Baronial Anniversary, where the new champion is announced.

Each year at least three gentles must contest for A&S Champion for one to be chosen for the position.
